Update Newfoundland and Labrador Enterprise Debtor Name Search

On Friday, July 18th, the Newfoundland and Labrador Enterprise Debtor Name Search will be changed to increase the number of close matches for searches involving abbreviations and acronyms for Newfoundland and Labrador. The change will become effective at 3:30am Newfoundland time.

For purposes of close (inexact) matching, the Enterprise Debtor Name Search ignores words that the system defines as common and mandatory business words. This change will add "NL", "N L", and "NFLD" to the list of common and mandatory business words which already includes "AND", "NF", "N F", "NEWFOUNDLAND" and "LABRADOR".

Examples:

  • Prior to this change, if an Enterprise Debtor Name Search included "NL" or "NFLD" in the search criteria, then the registered enterprise debtor name must contain that word in order to be returned as a close or exact match. For example, an Enterprise Debtor Name Search using the criteria "NL SHIPPING" or "NFLD SHIPPING" would not match enterprise debtor names like "NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR SHIPPING" and "ABC SHIPPING". After this change, the same search criteria will list those enterprise debtor names as close matches.
  • Another example pertains to numbered companies which include either the full name of the province ("NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR"), or previously-permitted province names or references such as "NF", "NFLD" and "NEWFOUNDLAND". Prior to this change, an Enterprise Debtor Name Search using the criteria "1234 NFLD INC" would not match "1234 NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR INC". After this change, the same search criteria of "1234 NFLD INC" will match "1234 NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR INC" plus any other registered enterprise debtor names containing the word "1234" such as "1234 NF" and "1234 NEWFOUNDLAND INC".
